2013 Billboard Music Awards

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift & Rihanna dominated the Billboard Awards (5/19/13).  I did not watch it.  I just saw the beginning, when Nicki Minaj was accepting some award ( I don't know what it was, the volume was down)  looking like a completely white woman.  Anyway, the complete list of winners is here:  http://edit.billboard.com/articles/events/bbma-2013/1562900/taylor-swift-gotye-and-rihanna-win-big-at-billboard-music-awards?page=0%2C1

janet. Turns 20

Janet Jackson's album janet. turned 20 years old over the weekend (5/18/13).  This groundbreaking album was like a female sexual awakening at the time of its release.  It is remembered for its incredible music videos and has won many awards.  janet. (the album) has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

janet. (1993)

In celebration, here's my favorite Janet Jackson song, That's The Way Love Goes.  Released as janet.'s (the album) 1st single, it became Jackson's (Janet- the singer) biggest hit on the billboard Hot 100, staying at # 1 for 8 weeks and won the 1994 Grammy for Best R&B Song:

Also check out these billboard articles.  Janet Jackson reflects on the cultural impact of her album janet.:

Mariah Carey Performs Hits Live

Well, I didn't watch the American Idol season finale (I haven't watched American Idol in years).  I don't know any of the contestants and I don't know who won, but someone won last week.  Good for them. (its not like we are going to hear any of there music.  I haven't heard anything from an American Idol since Jordin Sparks). Anyway, I saw that  Mariah Carey performed a medley of some of her greatest hits and new single Beautiful.  Check it out.

J. Cole's Born Sinner Album Art

Yes aren't we all.  Rapper J. Cole's 2nd studio album Born Sinner is set to be released on June 25 (2013).  Here is the album cover:

Music News: The Charts (5/13/13)

Yes, its them again...and they're back!!!  This is the 1st time I have done The Charts in the year 2013.  I was kind of disgusted with the new chart calculation and all that crap, but I am back on Billboard again, of course (I just can't stay away).  Plus I got really excited because I was browsing the 200 albums and I noticed that TLC's classic album CrazySexyCool has re-entered that chart. The 18 year old album has been climbing it for several weeks now.

CrazySexyCool (1994)

This just gets me really excited for this movie! Then I searched Billboard and there were interviews with Chilli and T-boz and they said they are working on a new album.  I love being excited about artist new music!  I miss when artist used to go away for a few years and then come back.  They need to go back to that  (but not 10 + years like TLC did this time). I guess everybody is getting excited.  Anyway, other news on the charts:

Hot 100
  1. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton- Can't Hold Us
  2. Pink featuring Nate Ruess- Just Give Me A Reason
  3. Justin Timberlake- Mirrors
  4. Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko- Stay
  5. Bruno Mars- When I Was Your Man

Wale at # 1

I still don't feel like the new R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart is capturing the taste of the core r&b and hip-hop music fans.  So I will show the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, because I think core r&b and hip-hop fans are more radio listeners than single downloaders.  Wale reigns with single Bad featuring Tiara Thomas.  Adorn by Miguel is still in the top 5 which is crazy (I think it was # 1 the last time I did The Charts, about 7 months ago)  The Top 5:

R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay
  1. Wale featuring Tiara Thomas- Bad
  2. Tamar Braxton- Love and War
  3. Rihanna- Pour it Up
  4. Drake- Started from the Bottom
  5. Miguel- Adorn
Let's add some more! I'll post the top 5 from the Youtube 100 music videos.  Psy holds the top 2 spots:

Youtube
  1. Psy- Gentleman
  2. Psy- Gangman Style
  3. Macklemore & Ryan Leslie featuring Wanz- Thrift Shop
  4. Pink featuring Nate Ruess- Just Give Me A Reason
  5. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton- Can't Hold Us

Justin Timberlake Performs Suit & Tie Live

Justin Timberlake performs Suit & Tie on Saturday Night Live, accompanied by Jay-Z.

Just Music: Alicia Keys- Tears Always Win

Mariah and Miguel are not the only ones getting back to soul (see Just Music: Mariah Carey featuring Miguel- Beautiful).  My girl A. Keys is doing it too!  Listen.

Tears Always Win (2013)

Just Music: Tamar Braxton- The One

Tamar is back with a 2nd single off of her album Love and War.  Its called The One, and it samples Mtume's R&B classic Juicy Fruit.  It's alright...Give it a listen.

Just Music: Mariah Carey featuring Miguel- Beautiful

Mimi partners up with R&B's leading man, Miguel for a new song.  It has an old-school soul feel to it. Very nice.

Just Vids: Pink featuring Nate Ruess- Just Give Me a Reason

Pink's Hot 100 # 1 single.  Her voice is just lovely.

Pictures from TLC Bio Movie

Some pictures have been released from the upcoming movie Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story, which is based on the lives of best-selling girl group TLC.  There were many comments about the choices for the roles of T-boz, Left Eye, and Chili ( being played by Drew Sidora, rapper Lil Mama, and Keke Palmer, respectively).  Looking at these pictures they did not do too bad.  The only complaint I have is Drew Sidora making those pouty lips.  She looks corny to me.    In the pictures, she is not looking very believable (like she did not do a good job acting/potraying T-boz).  I hope she did T-boz justice.  What do you think?

Drew Sidora on the left... Does anyone think T-boz does her lips like that?

There she goes again on the left.

Lauryn Hill Returns to Music!

Although not under the best of circumstances, Lauryn Hill released a new song!  Its called Neurotic Society.  Nowadays, she goes by Ms. Lauryn Hill,  and Ms. Lauryn Hill proves that she can still  spit mad fire.  She is one of the illest.  Oh, how we have missed her so.  In addition to this song, Ms. Hill has signed a new recording deal and will begin work on some new music set to be released on an EP.

Just Vids: Janelle Monae feat. Erykah Badu- Q.U.E.E.N.

Janelle Monae getting her Lady Gaga thing on. Not to say the music is like Lady Gaga.   All I can say is this video is different.  See for yourself.

Just Vids: Ray J feat. Bobby Brackins - I Hit It First

This song has been controversial for a few weeks.  Now, Ray J has released the video complete with Kim K look-a-like even though he denies the song being about her.  I actually like the hook, but the rapper could have been left out in my opinion.

Random Rihanna (5/3/13)

Well its finals week, and I am tired of studying, so its time to blog.
